On Saturday, Draegen Majors fired an opening round of 3 under par to open the Bear Creek West Jr. Golf Classic. Majors, a senior from Bixby, OK, had 6 birdies on the day. It was a beautiful day in Dallas, but just windy enough to make it tricky - all the more reason Major's and Grant Doverspike's sub-par rounds were noteworthy! Doverspike of Bakersfield, CA (2006), was one of the players to make eagle on Saturday, and also carded 4 birdies in the opening round. On Sunday, Doverspike carded another eagle, this time on number 4, and carded his second sub-par round of the event (the only player to have 2 sub-par rounds). His consistent play earned him his first FCWT title in this field of 54 from 11 states! For three seasons, this young man has played the FCWT and developed his game and his hard has paid off. Doverspike is one of the hidden gems in the class of 2006. Though Majors finished 2nd this weekend, his time will come as he has demonstrated in the past, his game keeps him in the Top 5 and ready to win.
Earning the Low Round honors for the 16-18 division was Geoffrey Shaw of Edmond, OK, who finished at 3 under par 69 after opening with a round of 77. Shaw, a 16 year old sophomore, had 5 birdies on the day to finish in 3rd place. Coming in 4th place, another Oklahoman, Junior Mark Johnson of Tulsa, whose final round of even par brought him from back in the pack to 4th place. Also coming in at even par on the day was Shane McDonald who thereby finished in 8th. Aaron McNeal of Cushing, OK (2006) and Andrew Wyatt of Lake Forest, IL (2007) finished T5.
In the boys 13-15 division, Christopher Walker of The Woodlands, TX (2008), led from wire to wire in this field of 14 boys from 6 states and Canada to earn his second FCWT win of the season. On Saturday after carding a 1 over par round of 73, Walker, led by 2 strokes over Stephen Carney of Tulsa, OK (2008), who opened with a 75. On Sunday, Christopher earned the Low Round honors with a 72 as well as defended his title here at the Bear Creek event. Carney finished 6 strokes ahead of 3rd place, Landon Tujague of Dallas, TX (2009). Tujague rebounded on Sunday and improved his score by 8 strokes to finish as a medalist in this event. Finishing in 4th place was Michael Revella of Tulsa, OK (2010) and tied for 5th were Ryan Conner of Fort Worth, TX (2009) and Zach Sanders of Overland Park, KS (2009). |
