Cauley wins in a playoff after final round is cancelled due to unplayable holes

The Sunshine State? Not on Saturday at The University of Florida Junior Golf Classic in Gainesville, unless you count liquid sunshine. The Canadian air that wreaked havoc on the Southeast earlier this week, reached Florida on Saturday.  With a cold start (for Florida), the weather worsened as the day went on. Intermittent showers in the mid-morning became heavy showers by late morning.  Play was suspended for a short time to allow for the greens to drain. The temperatures were in the low 50's.

On Sunday morning, the University of Florida course was deemed unplayable due to over 5 inches of rain and the Pump System breaking down which resulted in holes #3 and #7 becoming unplayable.  Since there was a tie in the Boys 16-18 division at the end of 18 holes, a playoff was necessary to determine the winner.

On Saturday, James Byrd of Windermere, FL (2007) and Hunter Hamrick of Montgomery, AL (2008) were in the clubhouse with the early lead at 2 over par 74.  By day's end Bud Cauley of Jacksonville, FL (2008) had joined them at 2 over par and a share of the lead.  The three co-leaders had to playoff on Sunday as the final round was cancelled due to unplayable holes.  Finishing in a tie for 4th place were:  Danny Calway-Fagen of Nashville, TN (2006), Ben Heisey of New Bern, NC (2010), and Brad Schneider of Valrico, FL (2007), who finished at +3, 75 on Satruday.  Wesley Graham of Port Orange, FL (2008), Joel Durrance of Ocala, FL (2006) and Jackson Beindorf of Vero Beach, FL (2008) finished T7 and 2 strokes back of the leaders at +4, 74.  A group tied for 10th at +5, 75:  Matt Ehrlich of Blue Bell, PA (2006), Jonathan Guess of Kingsland, GA (2006), Tyler Hock of Ocala, FL(2007), and Luke Trach of Jacksonville Beach, FL (2006).

Hunter Hamrick and Bud Cauley tied for the most birdies on Saturday with 4 apiece.  Among the leaders, James Byrd played the par 3s the best at 1 under;  Hunter Hamrick played the par 4s the best at 2 under and Bud Cauley played the par 5s the best also at 2 under par.  Each one played both the front and back nine at one over par on Saturday.

Sunday's playoff began on the par three # 2. Hunter Hamrick of Montgomery, AL (2008) knocked in his 10 foot putt to make birdie, Bud Cauley of Jacksonville, FL (2008) drained an 8 foot putt for birdie and James Byrd of Windermere, FL (2007) tapped in his 2 footer for birdie, so they all proceeded to # 8 par 3.  Bud hit his tee shot a little long and left, James hit his first shot into the hazard and Hunter's tee shot was also off the green.  Bud was able to chip up and make his 4 footer for par to win the playoff on the 2nd hole and earn his first FCWT title of the season.

In the boys 13-15 division, Kyle Kopsick of Lake Bluff, IL (2008) led all scores with a one over par 71 on Saturday.  FCWT newcomer 13 year old Bodi Karsono of Gainesville, FL (2010), finished 2 strokes back of Kopsick at 73.  David James of Warren, MI (2008) shot a 4 over par 74 to hold the 3rd place spot.  Kopsick led the boys 13-15 division with 3 birdies on Saturday, followed by Alex Slaton of Gainesville, FL (2010) currently T6, Takamasa Ozaki of Chiba, JAPAN (2009), currently tied for 8th, Travis Hedge of Powell, OH, (2008), currently tied for 11th and Gregory Carrier of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (2009), currently tied for 4th, all with 2 birdies in the opening round.
