Hats off to Hack! With winds blowing at 30 mph and gusts to 50 mph, one would think that the WEATHER would be the story at Wedgefield, but it wasn't. The wind did reek havoc on the field, but for at least one player this weekend was one that will not be easily replaced in the FCWT record book. Sixteen year old Jhared Hack of Heathrow, FL (2007) earned his 4th title in 5 events in a single season with Sunday's win at Wedgefield. Hack's previous wins this season came at Grand Cypress, Innisbrook and Saddlebrook. His only "non-win" was at TPC Sawgrass where he finished T20. Last season, Mike VanSickle of Wexford, PA (2005), was the only 16-18 male player to earn 3 FCWT wins. But four wins at the 16-18 level is unprecedented. Hack opened the Wedgefield Junior Golf Classic with the only sub-par round in the Boys 16-18 division, a one under par 71 that included 3 birdies. He entered the final round on Sunday with a one stroke lead over R. Graham Bradshaw of Indian River Shores, FL (2007), who opened with an even par round of 72 and is all alone in second place. On Sunday, Hack carded another round of 71 to finish 6 strokes ahead of second place. Future Tarheel Michael Sedacca of Orlando, FL (2006) tied Hack for Low Round Honors with a 71 of his own and landed him in a tie for 2nd place with Shaun O'Meara of Windermere, FL (2007), who began Sunday's round in 3rd place. Sedacca and O'Meara finished at 148, two strokes ahead of Wesley Graham of Port Orange, FL (2008), whose final round of 73 moved him into the Top 5. Finishing tied for 5th were: Danny Weisenberg of Sarasota, FL (2006), who also began the day in this position and led this division in birdies with 7 for the event, and James Byrd of Windermere, FL (2007), who began the day tied for 9th and carded the only eagle of the competition on the par 5 7th hole on Sunday.
YUN battles the wind to earn her THIRD FCWT win of the season After the opening round of the Wedgefield Jr. Golf Classic, 12 year old Kyle Roig of Pembroke Pines, FL (2011), had a one stroke lead over 13 year old Hannah Yun of Bradenton, FL (2010) in the Girls division heading into Sunday's final round. Sunday's round, like Saturday's, saw very windy conditions on the golf course with sustained winds near 30mph and gusts near 50. On Sunday, Hannah showed why she is at the Top of most of the Stats columns in the girls division including points, wins (3) and top 10 finishes (7). Hannah's final round of 77 (the low round for this division) put her 3 strokes ahead of the nearest competitor. Hannah began the day one stroke back of Kyle and one stroke ahead of Tia Gannon of Hilton Head, SC (2007). Miss Gannon carded an opening round of +5 (77) despite an 8 on the par 4 6th hole. On Sunday she carded a final round of 79 which was enough to give her 2nd place honors by as she finished 5 strokes ahead of overnight leader Miss Roig. On Saturday Miss Roig carded an opening round of 3 over par 75. Four birdies along the way helped her to also lead this division in birdies. On Sunday, Miss Roig earned her best FCWT finish to date with a final round of 86 to finish in third place. Finishing in a tie for fourth place were Anne Sprick of Windermere, FL (2006), who won the University of Florida event and began the day in 4th place, and senior Courtney Brink of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (2006) whose final round of 81 moved her up the board from back in the pack. In the 13-15 division, 14 year old Hojin Kang of Longwood, FL (2010) left the course on Saturday as the co-leader of this division with 15 year old Connor Arendell of Cape Coral, FL (2008). Arendell's WD left Kang alone at the top of the leaderboard. On Sunday, Kang posted the Low Round for this division with a 76 (+4) and earned his first FCWT win of the season. Kang also has three Top 5s: two second place finishes and a T5. Finishing in 2nd place was Mike Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (2008), who began the day one stroke back of Kang and tied for 3rd with Jordan Rizzo of Sarasota, FL (2009). Finishing in a tie for third, one stroke back of Smith were: Taylor Fontaine of Southbridge, MA (2008), who carded the only eagle in this division on Saturday on the par 5 11th hole, and Ed Waller of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (2010). Devin Patel of Celebration, FL (2008), playing in his first event of the season, held onto 5th place with rounds of 79-80. In the Boys 11-12 division, eleven year old Marcus Plunkett of St. Augustine, FL (2012) began the day with a 4 strokes advantage over 12 year old John Boehme of Jacksonville Beach, FL (2012). On Sunday, Boehme carded a final round of 83 to add a win to his previous 2nd and 4th place finishes this season. |
