| Mild weather continued in Miami for the second round of the Doral Silver Jr. Golf Classic. A second day of temperatures in the 70s were ideal for a round of golf. Sophomore Peter Uihlein of Bradenton, FL, who was a co-leader with senior Craig Tallent of Haverford, PA, after round one of play, moved into sole possession of the lead on Sunday with a second round score of one under par. For the second day in a row, Peter carded an eagle, this time on the par 5 fifth hole, making him the only player in the field with 2 eagles for the event. Peter will enter Monday's final round with a one stroke advantage over Tallent as well as Tommy Mou of Bradenton, FL (2009), who moved from tied for third to T2 with a round of one under par 70. Peter will be going for his third win this season in Monday's final round - a rarity for most players, but already surpassed this season by Jhared Hack, who earned his fourth win last weekend at Wedgefield. Not that Peter is chasing anyone; when you are # 2 in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings, you don't need to. Tallent and Mou will be two of the contenders with the potential to keep Uihlein from his third win. Both are playing well and both could go low at any time. The Low Round of the day was carded by Johnny Widmer of Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (2008). Widmer opened on Saturday with a round of 73 that kept him out of the Top 10, but his Sunday round of 3 under par 68 moved him into a T4 heading into the final round. Also going low on Sunday was Jordan Lewis of Frankfurt, IL (2008), with a round of 2 under par 69. After an opening round of 76, Lewis is in a T9 with one round to play. Diego Tamayo's round of 70 moved him up to #6 after missing the Top 10 on Saturday. Tamayo of Venezuela (2007) won here last season in the 13-15 division. Jed Dirksen of Coral Gables, FL (2007) has put together two solid rounds of 70-71 to put him T4 going into the final round. Also carding 71 on Sunday were Antonio Grillo of Vineyard Haven, MA (2008) and David Ruffer of Oakton, VA (2007). Both young men improved their scores by 12 strokes from day one. The recipient of last season's Sportsmanship Award, Mike Amato of Highland Mills, NY (2007), carded a second round of 72 after opening with a 76. Amato, who definitely has "game," is coming back nicely after an injury kept him out of tournament play for several months. Chris Kennedy's round of 72 moved him to T13 while scores of 72 put Beck Miller of Houston, TX (2007) and Gene Yang of East Brunswick, NJ (2007) in a tie for seventh. Chris Mullhaupt of Bradenton, FL (2007) and Billy McKay of Grand Blanc, MI (2006) will begin the final round T9 at 145 (+3). In the Boys 13-15 division, Bo Andrews of Raleigh, NC (2009), and Kyle Kopsick of Lake Bluff, IL (2008), the winner of the University of Florida event, continue to lead the way. Andrews and Kopsick were tied after round one after opening rounds of 71. On Sunday both young men "went low" and fired rounds of 69 to stay neck-and-neck, but distance themselves from the rest of the field by 5 strokes. They are also tied for the most birdies in this division with 6 each. Peter Meeks of Sarasota, FL (2009), the winner at Innisbrook, began the day one shot back of the leaders but while maintaining his 3rd place position, he lost some ground with a second round of two over par 73. Meeks will have a two stroke advantage over two-time winner Michael Cromie of Cary, NC, going into Monday's round. Cromie, who opened with a 77, fired back with a round of 70 on Sunday to move into 4th place. He has the game to catch these leaders if they don't bring their "A" game. James Tallent of Haverford, PA (2010), younger brother of Craig, moved into 5th place with a second round score of 72. Twelve year old Kyle Roig of Pembroke Pines, FL (2011) took the first round lead at the Doral Silver Jr. Golf Classic on Saturday after carding an opening round of +3 (74). On Sunday, Gia Fanelli of West Palm Beach, FL (2007) carded a round of 74 (+3) and moved from tied for 2nd to tied for 1st heading into Monday's final round. Miss Fanelli's best finish to date was 2nd at Amelia. Miss Roig's best finish to date was 3rd at Wedgefield last weekend. They will be paried with Kate Scarpetta of Moosic, PA (2007), who carded the Low Round of the day on Sunday to move from tied for 6th place to 3rd. Miss Scarpetta has a T3 and a 4th so far this season. One stroke back of Miss Scarpetta is Zahra Shah of Bradenton, FL (2007) who began round two in a tie for second and one stroke back of Miss Roig. Christie Tallent of Haverford, PA (2008), will begin the final round in 5th place. |
