| While much of the Eastern seaboard braced for a winter storm, South Florida enjoyed mild temperatures in the 70s.for the opening round of the Doral Silver Jr. Golf Classic. Senior Craig Tallent of Haverford, PA, and Sophomore Peter Uihlein of Bradenton, FL, led the way in the opening round by carding 2 under 69 to start this 54 hole event. Tallent carded 4 birdies on the day while Uihlein posted one of 3 eagles on the day, the other two were carded by Sean Frost and Benjamin Hixon. Just one stroke back of the leaders, at one under par 70, in a tie for 3rd are: Chris Mullhaupt of Bradenton, FL (2007), who had a near perfect round with only one bogey, Billy McKay of Grand Blanc, MI (2006), Jed Dirksen of Coral Gables, FL (2007), and Tommy Mou of Bradenton, FL (2009). Three players are at +1 (72) after Saturday's round: Esteban Calisto Albornoz of Quito, ECUADOR (2007), Gene Yang of East Brunswick, NJ (2007), and Beck Miller of Houston, TX (2007), who led this division in birdies with 5. With two rounds to play 35 of the 60 players are within 10 strokes of the leaders. In the Boys 13-15 division, Bo Andrews of Raleigh, NC (2009), playing in his first FCWT event, co-leads with Kyle Kopsick of Lake Bluff, IL (2008), the winner of the University of Florida event. Kopsick, along with Maxwell Campion, led this division in birdies with 3 for the opening round. Peter Meeks of Sarasota, FL (2009), the winner at Innisbrook, is currently one shot back and in 3rd place after an opening round of one over par 72. Fourteen year old Eduardo Chavez of Hillsborough, CA, is in 4th at 73 and Maxwell Campion of Boston, MA (2009) is in 5th place. Only 12 strokes separate the 12 boys on this leaderboard. With two rounds to play, a lot can still happen. Twelve year old Kyle Roig of Pembroke Pines, FL (2011) is out to the first round lead at the Doral Silver Jr. Golf Classic after carding an opening round of +3 (74). Miss Roig finished in 3rd place at Wedgefield and is now looking for her first win. She will have to hold off the ladies tied for 2nd as well as several others in the field. Gia Fanelli of West Palm Beach, FL (2007) and Zahra Shah of Bradenton, FL (2007) will begin round two in a tie for second and one stroke back of Miss Roig. Two strokes back and tied for fourth are Monica Miller of Davie, FL (2008), and Christie Tallent of Haverford, PA (2008). Cassie Boles of Lakeland, FL (2007) and Kate Scarpetta of Moosic, PA (2007) are tied for 6th after opening rounds of 79 (+9). Two rounds remain in this event. |
