YUN wins 4th title GIRLS division Thirteen year old Hannah Yun of Bradenton, FL (2010), came back "home" to play at the Bayonet Jr. Golf Invitational and earned her 4th FCWT win of the season. Last season Taylore Karle, the FCWT National Championship, won four titles including the Championship. Miss Yun, who was born in San Jose, CA, previously won at Grand Cypress in December, then won back to back in February at Mission Inn and Wedgefield. Her win at Bayonet gives her four wins in the Girls 13-18 division this season. Her opening round of 6 over 78 gave her a one stroke lead over FCWT newcomer Rachel Ann Sibbitt of Mill Valley, CA (2007) heading into Sunday's final round. Her final round of 80 on this very challenging golf course gave her a two stroke victory over FCWT newcomer Alexandra Stewart of Oak Grove, CA (2010). Miss Stewart, 14, carded the Low Round of the day with a 79 to move from tied for third into sole possession of second place in her first FCWT event. Alexandra edged out Alexis Holmes of Lincoln, NE (2008), who finished in third. Miss Holmes, who won the Far Oaks event in November, led this division in birdies with 3. Rachel Ann Sibbitt of Mill Valley, CA (2007) finished in 4th place and the other Floridian in the field, Jessy Tang of Orlando, FL (2007) finished in 5th. GONZALEZ cards two rounds of 71 to win the Boys 16-18 Bayonet Junior Golf Invitational ~ what a difference a year makes! The weather was fabulous in Northern California for the opening round of The Bayonet Junior Golf Invitational. Sunny skies and calm winds on Saturday allowed some players to post sub-par scores on this difficult, tight and "tricky greened" golf course, of which Jack Nicklaus said "Number 4 on Bayonet is the toughest par 5 in golf." On Sunday the threat of heavy rains and strong winds prompted an 8:00am shotgun. Nevertheless, for Geoff Gonzalez, a senior from Diablo, CA, it was simply a glorious weekend. On Saturday, Senior Thomas Buran of Scottsdale, AZ, fired an opening round of 2 under par and had a one stroke lead entering Sunday's final round. Buran had 5 birdies on Saturday as did Conrad Shindler of Coppell, TX (2007) and Geoff Gonzalez of Diablo, CA (2006) who were tied for 2nd place with David Lipsky of La Canada, CA (2006) going into the final round. On Sunday, Gonzalez matched his opening round score of 71 making him the only player in the field to post 2 sub-par rounds. Gonzalez, who finished in 2nd place at the Mission Hills Invitational in December, knows how challenging this golf course is. Last season in this event he finished T45 with rounds of 77-80-157. But today wasn't about the past, it was about the future. A future that looks bright for Gonzalez who has worked hard on his game and now ranks 44th in the country in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings. Gonzalez has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Cal Poly in the fall. Finishing in second place was James Dalthorp III of Rancho Park, CA (2006), who began the final round in 5th place after opening with a 72 even par. Dalthorp's final round of 71 wedged him evenly between 1st and 3rd place and earned him his third Top 5 of the season. Like Gonzalez, Dalthorp's finish is much improved over this event last season when he finished T39. In third place, one stroke back of Dalthorp, was Gregor Main, the 2005 FCWT 13-15 Player of the Year, from Danville, CA (2008). Main fired the Low Round of the day, 70 (-2), to move up from T10. Ryan Hallisey of Granite Bay, CA (2006), who carded one of 2 eagles on Saturday, finished in 4th place with rounds of 72-73-145 (+1). Senior David Lipsky of La Canada, CA finished in 5th place at 146 (+2) for the event. In the Boys 13-15 division, Sam Smith of Turlock, CA (2009) opened with a solid round of 72 and never looked back. Smith began Sunday's round with a 3 stroke advantage over Brian O'Regan of Walnut Creek, CA (2009) and Matt Rawitzer of Bellingham, WA (2009). He carded a 74 on Sunday to tie for Low Round Honors with James Albert of San Bernardino (2009) and won his first FCWT event! Brian O'Regan of Walnut Creek, CA (2009) carded two consecutive rounds of 75 to finish in second place. James Albert's Low Round of 74 moved him into a tie for 3rd place with Matt Rawitzer of Bellingham, WA (2009). Eleven year old Jay Burlison of Salinas, CA (2013) carded a final round of 76 to finish T5 with Cory McElyea of Santa Cruz, CA (2010). |
