The weather for the opening round of the Escena Junior Golf Classic was challenging. The wind was a steady 10-15mph with gusts of over 20mph. Despite the wind, senior Tyler Smith of San Juan Capistrano, CA, 2006, was able to post a round of even par to lead the 58 golfers in the boys 16-18 division. Smith, who finished T3 at the FCWT Sun Devil event just before Thanksgiving, is looking for his first win of the season. Three players are just one shot back after rounds of one over par, 73. Colin Featherstone, of Fallbrook, CA (2007), Shane Mason of San Diego, CA (2006), and Jack Paton of Hillsborough, CA (2007), will begin the final round tied for second. In a tie for fifth are some FCWT newcomers: Alex Shi Yup Kim of Fullerton, CA (2008), Gerardo (Jerry) Porras of San Diego, CA (2006), and Tim Joerin of Escondido, CA (2006).
Thirteen year old Ben Itterman of Carlsbad, CA (2010) leads the Boys 13-15 division after an opening round of 77. He will begin Sunday's final round one shot ahead of James Albert of San Bernardino, CA (2009). Kevin Rei of Sonora, CA (2008) is in third place after one round of play.
Twelve year old Kraig McLeod of Pebble Beach, CA, fired a round of 73 in the boys 11-12 division to lead all scores. McLeod is looking for his second FCWT win of the season.
