| Senior Austin Alfonso of Westlake Village, CA, came back from an opening round of 77 and fired a final round of 70 on Sunday to win by 2 strokes over 5 other players who finished tied for second at 149.
On Saturday the weather for the opening round of the first FCWT Escena Junior Golf Classic was challenging. The wind was a steady 10-15mph with gusts of over 20mph. Despite the wind, senior Tyler Smith of San Juan Capistrano, CA, 2006, was able to post a round of even par to lead the 58 golfers in the boys 16-18 division. Three players were just one shot back after opening rounds of one over par, 73. Colin Featherstone, of Fallbrook, CA (2007), Shane Mason of San Diego, CA (2006), and Jack Paton of Hillsborough, CA (2007), began the final round tied for second. Alex Shi Yup Kim of Fullerton, CA (2008), Gerardo (Jerry) Porras of San Diego, CA (2006), and Tim Joerin of Escondido, CA (2006), all newcomers to the FCWT, began the final round tied for 5th. But it was none of these players who walked away with the title of Champion. It was senior Austin Alfonso of Westlake Village, CA. Alfonso's final round of 2 under par, included 4 birdies, despite the sometimes windy conditions with temps in the mid-sixties.
Finishing in 2nd place were: senior Brandon Lang of Ramona, CA; junior Bryan Harris of Rancho Mirage, CA, whose 8 birdies tied for the most in this division with Colin Featherstone, sophomore Tyler Weworski of Carlsbad, CA, Clark Granum of San Diego, CA, and Tim Joerin of Escondido, CA (2006), who began the day tied for 5th.
Thirteen year old Ben Itterman of Carlsbad, CA (2010) led the Boys 13-15 division after an opening round of 77. He began Sunday's final round with a one shot lead over James Albert of San Bernardino, CA (2009). But it was Kevin Rei of Sonora, CA (2008) who forced a playoff with Itterman at the end of 36 holes. Itterman won on the first hole of the playoff. Albert finished in 3rd, one stroke back of Itterman and Rei.
Twelve year old Kraig McLeod of Pebble Beach, CA, fired a round of 73 on Saturday in the boys 11-12 division and never looked back. McLeod earned his second title of the FCWT season, after winning at Castle Pines in October. Finishing in 2nd place was Jay Lim of Stevenson Ranch, CA (2011). Lim finished 9 strokes back of Mcleod and 4 strokes ahead of Kyle Bowser of Danville, CA (2012). Nine year old Evan Mcleod (Kraig's younger brother) finished in 4th place. |
