Fifty-five boys teed it up on Saturday for the opening round of the Grand Cypress Jr. Golf Classic. Ajeetesh Sandhu of Chandigarh, INDIA, 2007, was the early leader, arriving in the scoring area with a 1 under par round of 71. Ajeetesh made 6 birdies on the day to lead this division. About a half an hour later, Jed Dirksen of Hampton, IA, 2007, bumped Sandhu down a step as he arrived in the scoring area at 3 under par with 5 birdies and only 2 bogeys on the day. Jed's score would hold. Joining Sandhu at -1 was Jhared Hack of Heathrow, FL (2007). The three will be paired together on Sunday for the final round. Three players are tied for 4th at even par: Aaron Fitzpatrick of Windermere, FL (2009) , Sandro Piaget of Jupiter, FL (2006) and Sean Dale of Jacksonville, FL (2008). In at one over and tied for 7th were: Bradley Freed of Weston, FL (2007), who led in pars with 15 on the day and Johnny Widmer of the Cayman Islands (2008). A pack of players came in at +2 and are tied for ninth: Jordan Elsen of Kenosha, WI (2006), Raj Nahal of Longwood, FL (2006), Craig Tallent of Haverford, PA (2006), Andres Echavarria of Medellion, COLOMBIA (2006) and Michael York of Naples, FL(2006).
In the boys 13-15 division, 14 year old Phillip Choi of Bethesda, MD (2009) took the first round lead by firing a two under par 70. In second place is Lucas Leibel of ONTARIO, Canada (2008) at 75. Chad Fleming of Seminole, FL (2008) is just one stroke back at 76.
In the girls division at the Grand Cypress Jr. Golf Classic, thirteen year old Hannah Yun of Bradenton, FL (2010), was the early leader and it held throughout the day. Miss Yun, whose round of 2 over par 74 was 2 strokes ahead of junior Zahra Shah , included 3 birdies. Only the 2nd hole caused Miss Yun a bit of a problem. Miss Shah, who is originally from the United Kingdom, but attends school in Bradenton, had 2 birdies on her round and will be paired with Hannah and current 3rd place participant, Rhea Nair. Miss Nair, a senior from Dubai, UAE, will start the final round one stroke back of Shah and 3 back of Yun. Kendra Little, who won the World Woods event, and Emily Kwak of Silver Spring, MD are tied for 4th going into Sunday's round. |
