NOT "Hack"-ing Around

After a 7 over par (78) on Saturday, Jhared Hack of Heathrow, FL (2007) was tied for 5th with three other players.  The weather, especially the wind, was tough by anyone's standards and the scores reflected that.  Many of the best players in Florida probably walked off the course, looked at their scores and felt like a "bunch of hackers;" these boys aren't used to 80+ scores.  However, Sunday was a new day and Jhared Hack fired a 2 under par 69 on Sunday to take the outright lead going into Monday's final round.  Hack, who is currently ranked 35th in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings, started the day on Sunday with a bogey, but immediately came back with a birdie and never looked back.  Jhared went on to put together a string of 7 pars to make the turn at even then made birdie on #10 and #17 to finish at 2 under.  He entered Monday's final round with a 3 stroke lead over FCWT newcomer Eric Shaw of Longwood, FL (2007), who began the second round tied for 9th but carded a round of even par 71 to move into 2nd place.  But for Hack Monday's round was about beating the golf course, not just the other players.  Hack made par, par, birdie and then repeated that sequence, then made par on 7, 8 and 9 to make the turn at 2 under (a 6 stroke difference from Saturday's opening round).  He made birdie on 10 followed by 2 pars another birdie par, "hiccup" on 15 (bogey) and then finished par-birdie-par with a round of 4 under 67.  Granted the course still finished one stroke ahead, but Hack proved he can play this course!

Jonathan Randolph of Brandon, MS (2007) finished in 2nd place after a final round of 1 under par.  Randolph tied Hack and Diego Tamayo for the most pars in this division for the event with 37.  Eric Shaw, who began Sunday's round in 9th but moved to 2nd, finished in 3rd with a final round score of one over par 72.  Chris Kennedy of Sarasota, FL (2006) showed why he is ranked 163 in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings.  Kennedy, who opened with an 85 under Saturday's wind extravaganza, fought back and finished in a tie for 4th place with a final round of 69 (-2).  Brad Schneider of Valrico, FL (2007), finished T4 with Kennedy after starting the day T7.  Kazuki Imura of Wesley Chapel, FL (2006) made one of only 2 eagles in this division and finished in 6th place at 223, after beginning the day T9.  Preston Knox of Dunedin, FL (2007), posted a final round of even par to move him into the Top 10 as well finishing in a tie for 7th with Andrew Nottenkamper of Boynton Beach, FL (2006), who began the day in 5th.  Robert Robertson of Philadelphia, PA (2008) moved into a tie for 9th with a final round of 72.  Danny Weisenberg of Sarasota, FL (2006) and Diego Tamayo of Venezuela (2007) round out the Top 10.

James Field Jr. of Pinecrest, FL (2007) led this division in birdies with 11 and finished in 12th place and 15 year old Brian Pak of Scotch Plains, NJ (2008) hung in there in his first FCWT event and posted a final round of 81 after opening with a 106.

Meeks' lead HOLDS

In the boys 13-15 division, Peter Meeks of Sarasota, FL (2009) took the first round lead with a 75 and rolled on to his first FCWT title.  On Sunday, Peter carded a second round score of 73 and entered the final round with a 9 stroke advantage over second place.  Meeks carded a final round of 78 that included an eagle on # 3.

Fourteen year old Richard Werenski of South Hadley, MA (2010) and Jordan Rizzo of Sarasota, FL (2009) began the final round tied for 2nd place.  Rizzo was in 2nd place after round one as well.  On Monday, 15 year old Rizzo carded a 76 to edge Werenski by 2 strokes for 2nd place.  Hugh Lindstrom of Wesley Chapel, FL (2008), who has already won at the FCWT Naples event, finished in 4th place, 2 back of Werenski, who led the division in birdies with 8.  Jace Striplin of Centerville, OH (2008) finished in 5th place.  The LOW ROUND award went to Nate Fridley of Sidney, OH (2008) for his final round of 73 (+2).  Also noteworthy was Ryan Wilson's (Bradenton, FL, 2009) final round of 74 and Ames Forbes (Bradenton, FL, 2008) final round of 75 - all three young men had lower final round scores than the leaders.

Werenski gets #4

In the boys 11-12 division, eleven year old Michael Werenski of South Hadley, MA (2012) opened the Innisbrook event with a two strokes over Joshua Lee of Orange Park, FL (2013).  On Sunday, Werenski expanded that lead to 8 strokes.  On Monday, Werenski earned his 4th win of the season, having previously won at Newport National, Duke, and Amelia.  Werenski's final round included a birdie on #15 that gave him a 9 stroke advantage in this win.  Thomas Nettles of McMurray, PA (2013) finished in 3rd place.

WONG waltzes to WIN

On Saturday the ladies at the Innisbrook Jr. Golf Classic played in 35 mph+ winds that would challenge even a seasoned LPGA player.  Kristina Wong of Vestal, NY (2009), held her own.  Miss Wong managed 3 birdies and the lowest round score of any of the 90 competitors on Saturday:  72 (+1).  On Sunday she increased her lead to 19 strokes heading into Monday's final round.  Miss Wong, who is currently ranked # 32 in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings, won last season at both the Back Creek event and the Penn State event and finished 2nd in the 2005 Sawgrass event.  On Sunday, Miss Wong, carded a final round of 74 and waltzed her way to her first FCWT win of the season.  She led this division in pars with 41 for the event.

Senior Meghna Bal of New Delhi, INDIA moved from 3rd place into 2nd place following Sunday's second round.  She held that spot through the final round to earn her highest finish of the season.  Twelve year old Dakota Dowd of Palm Harbor, FL, (2012), who scored better each day, finished in 3rd place in this her 2nd FCWT event.  Brianna Seo of KOREA (2007), began the final round in 5th place but moved to 4th with a final round score of 77.  Thirteen year old Justine Knox of Dunedin, FL (2011), playing in her first FCWT event, finished in 5th place.  Nicole Koller of Lewisville, KY (2008), who carded 3 consecutive birdies on the final day on #2, 3, and 4, led this division in birdies with 5 for the event.

Yueer Tang earns first FCWT win;
Proctor comes back

Nine year old Yueer Tang of Shenzhen, China (2014) took the opening round lead in the Girls 13 and under division at Innisbrook with a round of 83 on a day when many players struggled to break 80.  On Sunday, Miss Tang carded a round of 75 on the par 72 course.  On Monday, she finished with a round of 76 to win by 25 strokes.  Probably the most amazing thing about Miss Tang's scorecard is the number of pars she posted:  33.  Say what you want about shorter yardage, etc - you still have to get it in the cup.  Thirty-three pars of 54 holes is about 61% of the time, only 6 Boys in the 16-18 division made 33 or more pars for the event.

The other part of the story on Monday was Heather Proctor of Silver Springs, FL (2012.  Miss Proctor improved her final round score by 13 strokes over round one to finish in 2nd place. Ten year old Simin Feng of Beijing, CHINA, who has been playing golf for less than 2 years, finished in 3rd place with rounds of 89-87-88.  Keep watching - these girls are the future!
