¡Victoria!
Eighteen year old senior Andres Echavarria of Medellion, COLOMBIA, began the final round of the Orange Lake Junior Golf Classic in a four-way tie for second place and one stroke back of round one leader Sean Frost of Dallas, TX (2006). For Echavarria it was exactly where he needed to be. The 17th ranked Golfweek/Titleist player just needs to be in position as he knows how to win. Sunday's win at Orange Lake came exactly one month after his last FCWT win at Plantation. He began and ended his final round with a birdie, much like one puts an exclamation point at the beginning and end of a Spanish sentence. There were a couple of other birdies and bogeys and even a double bogey along the way, but when all the cards were scored, his final round 71 earned him his 2nd FCWT title, his third Top 5 and his fourth top 10 of the season. Finishing in second place, just two strokes off the pace was Chris Mullhaupt of Bradenton, FL (2007). Mullhaupt, who has almost "grown up" on the FCWT, carded an ACE on Sunday with a 1 on the par 3 12th hole. This was Chris's second 2nd place finish of the season and 5th Top 10 finish. Two strokes back of Chris in 3rd place was Michael Boutin of Bradenton, FL (2007), who carded the only eagle on Saturday, and earned his first Top 3 of the season. Three players finished T4: overnight leader Sean Frost of Dallas, TX (2006), Johnny Del Prete of Palm City, FL (2007) and future "Tarheel" senior Michael Sedacca of Orlando, FL.
In the boys 13-15 division, William Sjaichudin of Queensland, AUSTRALIA (2010), also earned his second FCWT win of the season. Sjaichudin, who won at Saddlebrook in January, began the day in a tie for second (much like Echavarria). He carded a final round of 73 to pull away from the pack and win by three. David Resovsky of Tarpon Springs, FL (2008) carded the Low Round of the day (72) to move into a tie for second place - his best finish of the season! Finishing tied with Resovsky in second place was Jeremy Wells of Prince George, VA (2008), who began the day in the same position. Taylor Bowen of Rehoboth, MA (2009) finished in 4th place at 154 and Hojin Kang of Longwood, FL (2010), who won at Wedgefield, finished in 5th.
Bringing out the best!
There is nothing like having someone or something bring out the best in us - the sense of accomplishment is priceless. Whether it was the circumstances or the playing partner, something brought out the best in the co-leaders of the Girls division of the Orange Lake Jr. Golf Classic. Ji Young Oh of Kyumggito, SOUTH KOREA, 2007 and Victoria Tomko of Lontzen, BELGIUM, 2006 both fired opening rounds of even par on Saturday to enter the final round with a 4 stroke advantage over 3rd place. Miss Oh, who recently won the FCWT USF event, played a very consistent round on Saturday and led this division in pars with 16 while also carding one birdie and one bogey along the way. Miss Tomko, playing in her first event of the season, led this field in birdies with 5 and carded an equal number of bogeys. On Sunday, Miss Oh and Miss Tomko teed it up in the final pairing of the day along with junior Emily Kwak of Silver Springs, MD. Miss Oh made par-par-birdie-eagle and things were off and running. She was 4 under at the turn. Miss Tomko started with 8 pars in a row, then made birdie on 18 just before making the turn. Miss Oh made two birdies on her second nine (the front) but an unfortunate 6 on # 4 kept her from going any lower than her 4 under par in this particular round. Her round of 67 was enough to give her a 2 stroke win over Miss Tomko who finished at 2 under par 69 on Sunday. Both ladies played absolute fabulous rounds! Alexandra Gibson of Henderson, NV (2007) who began the day in a tie for 4th finished in 3rd place after carding a final round of even par, her first Top 3 of the season and her second Top 5. Innapha Tantanavivat of Bangkok, THAILAND (2007) came from back in the pack to finish tied for 4th place with a final round of 74. Also finishing T4 at 156 was junior Emily Kwak of Silver Springs, MD. |
