| The first round of the University of New Mexico Junior Golf Classic got underway on Saturday under mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s. Steve Ziegler of Broomfield, CO (2007) and Stephen Carney of Tulsa, OK (2008) both carded opening rounds of one under par to co-lead the Boys 16-18 division heading into Sunday's final round. Ziegler, who has four Top 5 finishes on the FCWT this season (3 of which are Top 3s) led this division in birdies with 5 in search of his first win. Sixteen year old Carney has two Top 3 finishes this season as he also pursues his first FCWT win. One stroke back of the co-leaders are three players tied for third: Matthew Rubin of Englewood, CO (2007), Brett Jessen of Ogden, UT (2006), and James Gehrke of Albuquerque, NM (2007). One stroke back in a tie for 6th place are Graham Kent of Lynden, WA (2007), Devin Schreiner of Durango, CO (2006), and Alex Johnson of Tulsa, OK (2006). Rounding out the Top 10 in a tie for 9th at +2 are: Daniel Ross of Tucson, AZ (2006), Jonathan Lopez of Aurora, CO (2006), Kaleb Mahanes of Erie, CO (2008), Keith Narramore of Las Cruces, NM (2007), and Erich Stechman of Yuma, AZ (2007).
In the Boys 13-15 division, Matt Rawitzer of Bellingham, WA (2009) has a one shot lead over William Skinner of Boulder, CO (2009). Rawitzer, who won at Turkey Creek and has four Top 3s so far this season, led this division in birdies with 5. Fourteen year old Skinner, had 4 birdies on the day, and has a 2nd place finish and a T5 coming into this event. Two players are tied for third at 76 (+4): Landon Tujague of Dallas, TX (2009) and Reid Martin of Mukilteo, WA, 2009. Tujague won at Bear Creek East in February; Martin, a former 11-12 division FCWT National Champion, has a 3rd, 2nd and 6th place finish.
Dylan Healey of Albuquerque, NM (2012) carded a round of 75 on Saturday to have a 3 stroke advantage over Wyndham Clark of Greenwood Village, CO (2012). Healey had 2 birdies on the day to lead this division.
In the girls division at the University of New Mexico Junior Golf Classic, Alexis Holmes of Lincoln, NE (2008), carded an opening round of 74 to lead all scores in the girls division. She will be looking for her 2nd FCWT win in Sunday's final round. In second place is FCWT newcomer, Cheyenne Hickle of Gilbert, AZ (2009). Miss Hickle opened with a round of 77 which gives her a 2 stroke advantage over Katie Saucier of Bainbridge Island, WA (2007) heading into Sunday's final round. |
