It was a brutally cold and windy day at Newport National! Snow showers mixed with temperatures in the 40s all morning made for a challenging day. Even so, Matthew Broome of Barrington, RI (2007) played an incredible round of golf and had a few short putts fallen, he would have been under par. Broome, who carded a solid round of one over par 73 leads Michael Gunderson of Duxbury, MA (2007), Trevor Carle of Santa Rosa, CA (2006) and Evan Harmeling of North Reading, MA (2007) by 3 strokes going into Sunday's final round. Joseph Fucigna of Weston, CT, 2006 is all alone in 5th place at +6 (78) followed by a pack of player T6: Justin Hughes of Simsbury, CT (2006), John Kelly of East Longmeadow, MA (2007), Matthew Stasiak of Clarence, NY (2007), Andrew Woods of Simsbury, CT (2006), Cody Paladino of Kensington, CT (2007), and Kento Mizumaki of Windermere, FL (2007). In this field of 44 boys there could be some final round surprises. Watch for Paladino who was last year's runner-up (to his older brother) and could go low on the final day to shake up the field.
In the boys 13-15 division, three players are tied for the lead at 78. Max Campion (Brookline, MA, 2009), Antonio Grillo (Vineyard Haven, MA, 2008) and Jeff Hatten (Farmington, CT, 2008) will enter the final round as co-leaders with a one stroke advantage over Sam Weiss of Rye, NY (2008). Hatten, an FCWT newcomer, led this division with 4 birdies on the day. Campion, who finished 4th at this event last season, led the division with 12 pars for the round. Two strokes back of Weiss and tied for 5th are Thomas Kelly III of Hingham, MA (2008) and Taylor Bowen of Bradenton, FL (2009).
Michael Werenski is following in his brother Richard's footsteps as he leads the boys 11-12 division going into Sunday's final round. Werenski has an 8 shot lead over Alexander Kane, Topsfield, MA, 2012 and Noah Walker, Norwell, MA, 2011.
Natalie Sheary of West Hartford, CT (2007), posted a round of 76 on Saturday at the New England Junior Golf Classic. Sheary who won the FCWT Bear Creek East event last season and was named an FCWT 2nd Team All-American braved the bitter cold and made 14 pars on the day to finish 7 strokes ahead of Sara Whitney of Hingham, MA (2007) going into the final round. Sara carded the only birdie of the round in this division on the par 4 15th hole. Whitney, who finished 3rd in this event last year will have a 3 stroke advantage over Kerri Connelly of Duxbury, MA (2007). Connelly , an FCWT newcomer, is 4 strokes ahead of 4th place entering Sunday's final round. |
