The first FCWT Westchase Classic was played under partly cloudy skies, but after over 6 inches of rain on Thursday, partly cloudy was an improvement.  Temperatures were in the 80s for most of Saturday’s round and then repeated for Sunday’s round. In the Boys 16-18 division at the end of round one, two players were 2 under par 70 and co-leading as they headed into Sunday’s final round. Nico Irrgang of Bavaria, GERMANY (2008) and Luis Thiele of Curitiba, BRAZIL (2008) who were sharing the lead at the beginning of the final round were paired with 15 year old Oscar Sharpe of Cheltenham, ENGLAND (2010) who won at Tampa Bay a month ago.  Sharpe, just one stroke back of the leaders, had carded 17 pars on Saturday and one birdie. On Sunday, he began his round with a birdie to quickly eradicate his deficit. From there he made pars until # 10 when he made birdie again. By that point he had pulled away from the co-leaders and was focused on playing the golf course. A bogey on # 17 was quickly reconciled with a birdie on # 18 allowing him to finish at 3 under par for the event and become the first boys 16-18 player to win twice this season. Overnight co-leader Luis Thiele finished in 2nd place at 143, 2 strokes back of SharpeCyril Suk of Bradenton, FL (2011) and Nate Mc Coy of West Des Moines, IA (2008) finished tied for 3rdSuk fired a 4 under par on Sunday to move from out of the Top 10 up the leaderboard and earn the Low Round award. Four players finished T5 at 145, just 4 strokes behind Sharpe: David James of Warren, MI (2008), Tae Lim of Seoul, KOREA (2009), Blake Waller of West Des Moines, IA (2010), and Carson Weinand of Naples, FL (2009). Steven Loer of Sarasota, FL (2008) and Namsub Padungsirireth of North Augusta, SC (2009) finished T9.

In the Boys 13-15 division, at the end of round one there was a battle brewing.  Three young men were tied for the lead at 73: Meechai Padungsiriseth of Bangkok (2011), Robert Smith of Osteen, FL (2010), and Patrick Rodgers of Avon, IN (2011), who has been in the “thick” of things in every tournament he has played so far this season.  To make matters even more interesting, Harry Higgs of Overland Park, KS (2010) and Blake Morris of Waterbury, CT (2011), both having previously won events this season, were tied for 4th – only one shot back of the leaders. On Sunday, Blake Morris fired a 4 under par 68 to pull away from the field and become the first player in the Boys 13-15 division to win two events this season. Morris had 7 birdies for the weekend including 5 on Sunday on his way to his round of 68. Patrick Rodgers, who led this division in pars, took home 2nd place, his 4th top 3 of the season.   Harry Higgs earned 3rd place.

After opening with a round 3 under par 69 on Saturday to lead the Girls 13-18 division, Giulia Molinaro of Torino, ITALY (2008) carded a second round of 72 even par to win the Westchase Classic.  Miss Molinaro, who won the Doral Silver event and the IMG Championship last season – making her a first team FCWT All-American, thus wins her first FCWT event of the season.  Miss Molinaro led this division in birdies with 6. Fourteen year old Monifa Sealy of TRINIDAD (2011), who carded the only eagle of this division, finished in 2nd place at 147, one stroke ahead of 3rd place finisher Kristen Warhurst of Mobile, AL (2008).
