Doucett fires a 2 under par 69 to win by 1 over Colby
At the end of Saturday's opening round, Marshall Colby of Thousand Oaks, CA (2009) and Bruce Doucett, Jr. of Apple Valley, CA (2008) were co-leading the Boys 16-18 division at the Tahquitz Creek Open . Each posted a solid round of even par 71 despite a struggle with the par 4 8th hole that resulted in a 7 for each. Colby, a much-improved second year FCWT player, finished 2nd at the Mission Inn Open in December after carding rounds of 69-71. Doucett, who is playing in his first FCWT event, led this division in birdies with 5 on Saturday. On Sunday, Doucett added 5 more birdies to his stats and fired the Low Round of the day - a 2 under par 69 to win the event while leading the field in birdies with 10. Marshall Colby fired a round of 1 under par, leaving him just one stroke short of Doucett, but earning him 2nd place.
Fifteen year old FCWT veteran Tad Murray of La Quinta, CA (2010) who began the day tied for 6th place posted a final round of even par to move into 3rd place, his first top 3 of the season. Four players finished tied for 4th including SeungRok Cheon of Indio, CA (2009) who carded a final round of 70 to move from up the leaderboard from out of the top 10. Also finishing tied for 4th were: Mario Clemens of Beverly Hills, CA (2009), who began the day tied for 6th; sixteen year old Parker Houston of Rancho Santa Fe, CA (2010), who began the day in 5th place; and Mason Klein of Santa Monica, CA (2009) who began the day tied for 3rd with Andre Navarro of Turlock, CA (2008). Dakota Duerr of Murrieta, CA (2009) finished with a round of 73 that placed him 8th. One stroke back of Duerr, in 9th place, was Chris Russo of Westlake Village, CA (2009). Three players finished tied for 10th at +8: Yoon Ko of Indio, CA (2009), Chris Olmstead of Puyallup, WA (2009) and Andre Navarro, who led this division in pars on Saturday with 15. Ko posted 27 pars for the tournament which tied with Cole Seeger for the most in this division. Three players carded eagles during the weekend's play: Justin Edwards of Westlake VIllage, CA (2009), Mark Leong of Danville, CA (2009) and Jordan Sedlock of Danville, CA (2010).
The Boys 13-15 division was highly contested. On Saturday Evan Markley of Scottsdale, AZ (2011) fired a 4 under par round that included 7 birdies to lead all scores. Right behind Markley was Macgregor Hoobery of Santa Maria, CA (2011) with a round of 3 under par. Fourteen year old Markley won the Grayhawk event at the end of December. Hoobery won the Coyote Creek event in November, so we were set for a great final round.
On Sunday, Hoobery fired a 1 under par 70 to finish at 4 under for the event and earn his 2nd win of the season. Markley's round of 72 (+1) allowed him to take home 2nd place. Hoobery led the division in pars with 26 for the weekend, while Markley led in birdies with 10. Austin Quick of Scottsdale, AZ (2011) started the final round in 3rd place at 73, then tied Hoobery for the Low Round on Sunday to hold on to the 3rd place spot. Jay Burlison of Salinas, CA (2013) remained in 4th place. Luke Vivolo of Carmel, CA (2011) carded a final round of 72 to finish tied for 5th with Dustin Haygood of Whittier, CA (2010), whose final round of 74 moved him up the leaderboard as well.
Twelve year old Ben Doyle of San Diego, CA (2014) was leading the Boys 11-12 division for the third time in 6 weeks. Doyle, who won the Mission Hills Open in December and then won at PGA West last weekend, began Sunday's round with a one stroke advantage over Tyler Moore of Escondido, CA (2015). At the end of 36 holes the two boys were tied, but 11 year old Moore was able to overcome Doyle in the playoff and earn his first win of the season. Randy Ross of Phoenix, AZ (2014) who finished just 3 strokes back of the leaders took home third place.
Kristen Allard of Porterville, CA (2008) led all scores in the Girls 13-18 division after the opening round of the Tahquitz Creek Open. On Saturday, Kristen posted a 1 over par 72 and led this division in birdies with 5. On Sunday, Paige Spiranac of Monument, CO (2011) who began the final round in 2nd place after opening with a round of 2 over par (74), carded a final round of even par to finish 3 strokes ahead of overnight leader Allard, and earn her 2nd win of the season. Spiranac tied Brittany Schlachter of Palm Desert, CA (2009) for most birdies for the weekend with 5 each and Paige led the pars with 25. Tarah Taylor of Mission Viejo, CA (2009) finished in 3rd place with rounds of 77-79. |
