ROUND 3 was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Leaders Hold their Own during Round Two

It was not a good weather day for the opening round of the La Cantera Open, at least not for the morning portion of the round. But this is January, and most of these players aspire to play college golf. They certainly don't get to play in ideal circumstances.

On Sunday, there was a heavy frost which resulted in a delay of the starting times. When play resumed,

Martin

Reid Martin of Mukilteo, WA (2009) was able to continue to lead in the Boys 16-18 division. On Saturday, Reid made the best of the day and opened with a round of 75 (+3) which gave him a one stroke advantage over John Beringer of Loveland, OH (2009). Martin led this division in pars with 13 on Saturday while Beringer and Bryan Jaska of Bowling Green, KY (2009) led in birdies with 4 apiece. Martin has finished 2nd in his last two events and would really like a win here. He began Sunday's round one shot ahead of Beringer and two shots ahead of

Edens

Parker Edens of Greeley, CO (2009) and

Graves

True Graves of Odessa, TX (2009). On Sunday Reid carded a 79 to be at 154 for the event, which gives him a 3 stroke advantage over Graves heading into the final round. Graves' second place spot gives him a 3 stroke advantage over the threesome currently tied for 3rd at 160: Parker Edens of Greeley, CO (2009),

Holtgrewe

David Holtgrewe of Cherry Hills Village, CO (2009), and

Marusiak

Charlie Marusiak of Phoenix, AZ (2008), who tied for the Low Round of the day (76) with

Estrada

Justin Estrada of Yuba City, CA (2009). Estrada is currently in 7th place at 162, one stroke back of Beringer who is in 6th place at 161. Bryan Jaska of Bowling Green, KY (2009) is currently in 8th place. The 5 players tied for 9th include the top 2 players from the Boys 13-15 division within a division. Bryan Fickle of Sedalia, CO (2011) and Brendan Connolly of Castle Rock, CO (2011) are now tied for the top honors among the Boys 13-15 participants. Fickle began the day two strokes ahead of Connolly, but Connolly closed the gap and on Monday they will begin the round all square. Also tied for 9th are Austin Snell of Baytown, TX (2008),

Matt Baum

Matt Baum of Albuquerque, NM (2008), and Neil Dufford of Midland, TX (2009). Justin Blader of Eden Prairie, MN (2010) continues to be the 3rd highest ranked player among the Boys 13-15. He is currently ranked T19 after improving his second round score by 4 strokes.

Due to the cancellation of Round 3, the Boys 13-15 players had a playoff to determine the winner.  Connolly won on the 3rd playoff hole with Fickle finishing 2nd and Blader finishing 3rd.

Snyder

David Snyder of Austin, TX (2016) continues to lead

Crawford

Clayton Crawford of Aspen, CO (2014) in the Boys 11-12 division.

The Girls division of the La Cantera Open battled some bad weather on Saturday morning for the opening round of the event. On Sunday, they were delayed in their start due to frost. Once things got underway,

Sims

thirteen year old Mariana Sims of Austin, TX (2012), who took the first round lead with an 83, held onto that lead with a second round score of 88. On Saturday, she led this division in pars with 9 and had a 5 stroke advantage with 36 holes left to play. Now she has a 6 stroke advantage with 18 holes left to play. Her nearest competitor is Katie Purcell of Ames, IA (2010), who began round two in 4th place, but carded an 85 on Sunday, shaving 7 strokes off her opening round, to move into 2nd place. Sophie Hayashi of Carmel, IN (2010) had the Low Round of the day (84) to move into 3rd place at 178, just 7 strokes back of the leader. Molly Dorans of Erie, CO (2009) will begin the final round in 4th place, 3 strokes back of Hayashi and Chelsea Michalek of Glenview, IL (2009) will begin in 5th place at 185.
