Turkey Field Tightens: Catlin now shares the lead with McElyea and Wyllie
On Saturday, John Catlin of Carmichael, CA (2009) carded an opening round of even par that included 4 birdies. Catlin, who finished 2nd at La Costa two weeks ago, started Round Two with a one stroke advantage over Justin Estrada of Yuba City, CA (2009) and a 3 stroke advantage over Cory McElyea of Santa Cruz, CA (2010), Fredrik Palmer of Modesto, CA (2009), Alexander Gutesha of Greenwood Village, CA (2009), and Grant Rappleye of Elk City, CA (2008), who won the Sun Devil Classic in November.
On Sunday, the leaderboard changed considerably. Mark Wyllie of San Jose, CA (2010) fired a 2 under par 70 to move into a tie for the lead and McElyea's 73 also put him tied for the lead at 148. So as we head into Monday's final round, we have a 3-way tie for the lead and the leaders have a 2 shot advantage over Palmer and Justin Edwards of Westlake Village, CA (2009) who are at 150. One stroke back and tied for 6th are Cameron Rappleye of Elk City, CA (2008) and Paul McNamara III of Palos Verdes Estates, CA (2009), who began the second round tied for 8th. Joe Rosenthal of Malibu, CA (2009) will start the final round in 7th place at 152. While Scott Patterson of Thousand Oaks, CA (2008) and Gutesha round out the Top 10 at 153, 5 shots back of our co-leaders.
Four players have carded eagles so far in this division: Niko Bain of Phoenix, AZ (2008) made a 3 on the par 5 7th hole on Sunday; Riley Kirkpatrick of San Diego, CA (2009) made a 3 on the par 5 16th hole on Saturday; Cory McElyea of Santa Cruz, CA (2010)also made an eagle on # 16, but his came on Sunday; and Chase Patten of Simi Valley, CA (2009) made his on the 13th hole par 4. McElyea also leads this division in birdies so far with 8.

He began Round Two with a 2 stroke advantage over John Ahern of Morrison, CO (2011). On Sunday, Ahern and Lawrence Fu of Piedmont, CA (2012) both carded rounds of 83 which gave Ahern the lead by 3 strokes and move Fu into a tie for 2nd with overnight leader Rowney. The three will be paired together for Monday's final round. Taylor Lowe of Davis, CA (2010) will begin Monday's round in 4th place at 173, tied with Hunter Rappleye of Elk Grove, CA (2013), who made one of the biggest improvements between Round One and Round Two. Cameron Skreden of Sacramento, CA (2010) will start in 6th place at 175 and Taylor Wild of Castle Rock, CO (2011), who also made a tremendous comeback from an opening round of 97, will start in 7th place.

Salazar gives herself a little breathing room
At the end of Round One of the Turkey Creek Open, Paige Lee of Folsom, CA (2013), Joi Pentin of Pleasanton, CA (2009), and Lauren Salazar of Santa Clara, CA (2012) were tied for the lead at 79. Ariana Patterson of Carmel, CA (2009) was one stroke back at 80. Miss Salazar, wholed this division in birdies with 3 on Saturday, carded an 80 on Sunday to take sole possession of the lead. Miss Patterson matched her 80 and continues to be just one stroke back and tied for 2nd with Kortnie Maxoutopoulis of Pleasanton, CA (2011) and Jordan Ontiveros of Alamo, CA (2009), who each carded a 2nd round of 76 (the Low score of the day in this division) to move up the leaderboard. Pentin is now in 5th place at 164. The Top four players are separated by only one shot, so it should be a great finish on Monday. And if you are looking for a possible surprise finisher, look no further than Simone Strauss of Rancho Mirage, CA (2009). Miss Strauss is leading the field in birdies with 5 and is only 6 shots back of the leader. If she gets "hot" on Monday, watch out! |
